Astonishingly, almost 14 years have now passed since Eglo and Numbers regular Mali Larrington-Nelson AKA Shy One released her debut album. Mali, the West London DJ/producer's second full-length excursion, is therefore well overdue. Mixed by CD-R main man (and former Attica Blues member) Tony Nwachukwu and featuring a hand-picked selection of notable guests (Pirvate Agenda, Steve Spacek, George Riley, James Messiah), the album is effortlessly soulful and does a terrific job in mixing and matching elements of broken beat, R&B, neo-soul, hip-hop, intergalactic and off-kilter house (think Funkineven and his Apron Records imprint), and much more besides, Mali is not only a terrific example of 21st century Black British musical fusion, but also a genuinely brilliant album.
