Run DMC's 'Sucker MCs' remains one of the most important tracks in hip-hop history: a stark, skeletal blast of drum-mach minimalism, one which made a paper pulp of hip-hop's sonic rulebook. On nothing but Larry Smith's raw Oberheim beat, daredevil duo Run and DMC delivered cold, unadorned boasts with a precision and confidence, swapping industrial heft into a sound which would feel otherwise dated from then on. The story behind it is just as legendary: the duo originally recorded the track as the B-side to 'It's Like That', but its stripped-back aggression hit so hard in clubs and on radio that it overshadowed the A, quickly becoming an anthem for the new school. It unintentionally became a blueprint for the entire next wave of rap, inspiring countless MCs (including a young LL Cool J) to pick up the mic.
