Brooklyn's Ahmed Sirour clearly has little interest in sanding the edges off his jazz-funk sensibilities and good, frankly, because this latest 7" for Jazz Room works precisely because it feels so loose in the hips. 'Brooklin Bossa' glides in with breezy samba shuffle, syrupy Rhodes flourishes and a bassline that rolls along with real late-summer ease. Flip it over and 'T.G.I.F. (Thank God It's Funky)' nudges things towards tougher territory, all clipped drums, rubbery low-end movement and little flashes of brass arranged with proper dancefloor instinct. Sirour understands groove as something supple and conversational, never pinned down too tightly.
